Issues with 100% disk usage on windows 8.1 - massively degrading laptop performance with minimal use.
I have a Samsung NP5500P5Cl running Windows 8.1, on an intel i5, 6GB of RAM, 64-bit. The laptop is just under 2 years old.
I have been having issues with my disk usage for over 6 months now. According to task manager, my disk usage hits 100% incredibly often for very simple tasks. The CPU and Memory very rarely reach above 50%. I have googled the problem, and as suggested disabled Windows superfetch and search indexer, but it didn't have any effect.
This is a typical example of what task manager looks like, with the associated write (?) speeds. Lately, it has been getting worse. For context, on reddit now, if I open a gif, it will play increasingly slowly till it sits about 1 frame a second. That entire tab will then be unusable and very unresponsive until either it is refreshed or the gif finishes loading.
I'm a PhD student and would like the option to study and work at home on my laptop, but as it stands having Chrome, Word and EndNote open at the same time slows everything to a crawl.
I have tried CCleaner and one other program (can't quite remember it's name. The UI was a number of colour blocks which represented the amount of space various files were taking up on my harddrive). My HDD is 1TB with about ~600GB still free.
Short of reinstalling windows, is there anything else I can do? It seems like this massive disk usage is a problem but trying to apply the solutions I read doesn't seem to be working. I would be very grateful for any help!
